The Remote Mirage: Volume vs. Remote Share

The Remote Mirage: Volume vs. Remote Share

"Everyone says remote work is dead. They are just looking in the wrong industries. But high remote percentages can be misleading."

When looking at remote work opportunities across 209,000+ active jobs, the headline numbers often obscure the truth. We mapped out the complete job market to understand where the "Remote Mirage" ends and where actual opportunity exists.

The "Remote Mirage"

At the top left of our quadrant—what we call the "Remote Mirage"—we see disciplines like Data Analytics (14.2% remote) and Marketing & Communications (11.7% remote).

Yes, they offer the highest percentage of remote work, but look at the total volume. These disciplines represent a comparatively small fraction of all active jobs. The competition for these specific remote roles is mathematically punishing.

The High-Volume Anchor

Conversely, look at the bottom right. Roles like Healthcare Clinical and Operations Strategy have massive, sustained demand (20,000+ active job openings), but their remote share is incredibly low (often under 5%). These are the high-volume anchors of the job market.

The sweet spot for job seekers isn't just about finding the highest remote percentage—it's about finding the intersection of high remote share and high absolute volume. In 2026, Software Engineering (8.1% remote, 35,000+ jobs) and Sales & Business Development (9.1% remote, 28,000+ jobs) are the undisputed kings of this intersection.

Remote jobs haven't vanished. They have concentrated deeply into specific, structured quadrants of the market.

The job market isn't dead. But you can't navigate it blindly.
